Before you send a tip
Ordinary email is not a secure channel. It can be read in transit and it records who sent it. We do not yet run an encrypted drop box, and we would rather lose a story than have someone harmed for sending it.
- If you are in Iran, or anywhere else where contact with foreign media carries legal risk, do not email us from an account or a device that can be tied to you.
- Do not send material you obtained through your job unless you understand the risk to yourself.
- Do not send classified material or personal data about private individuals.
What helps us most is material that anyone can check: public documents we have missed, official records, court filings, shipping and corporate registries, satellite imagery with a date and a source, and errors in our own reports.
What happens to your message
Messages are read by the desk. We do not publish a sender’s name or contact details without permission. We cannot promise a reply to every message, but every correction request is checked.
